How to price a haircut

A good price pays three things: your time in the chair, the products you use and a slice of the shop's fixed costs. Only then do you add profit.

Pricing by copying the shop down the street ignores your own rent, speed and skill. Doing the math once gives you a price you can defend.

The formula

Cost = products + (minutes ÷ 60 × hourly rate) + (monthly fixed costs ÷ appointments per month). Recommended price = cost ÷ (1 − margin).

  • A 40-minute cut at 30 per hour costs 20 in labor
  • 1,500 of monthly costs over 180 clients adds 8.33 per cut
  • With a 25% margin, divide the total cost by 0.75

Tips to raise your price

Raise prices in small steps, announce them in advance and add value you can see: hot towel finish, beard line-up, a styled product. Track your best-selling services to know where clients accept a higher price.
